Altruism the Root of all Evil?

As I wrote in my original post, I am in favour of compassion - a point that was omitted in Malcom's quote and discussion - but not in altruism. In other words, yes I want to help the poor and sick, but I do not regard their claims as a first call on my existence and life. To accept altruism consistently is to in practice deny individual rights.

I think my friend would quite enjoy this article especially after his yearbook qoute that stated "Altruism is the root off all evil. Read it all here.

The trend in this current recession seams to be to apply a Keynesian form of governance like the initial bailout, big three bailout and the Conservative’s plan to go into deficit to “save the economy”, these are tragic occurrences. I believe that most democratic governments would not make the mistake of assuming Keynesian worked, but are forced into following its path by misinformed voters who demand some sort of action. The fact is Keynesian does not help the economy. FDR a Keynesian applied this theory to the Great Depression through various government programs and it did nothing, some economists say it even went so far as to extend the Great Depression. For people who truly believe that more government spending will help watch this video, it may change your mind (people who agree with me watch it just because it's a good video).

Conservatives plan to cut public funding of federal parties. My first reaction was jubilation but my second is why was this allowed in the first place? I don't care if Bob Rae think it is un-democratic to cut spending (although it appears a majority disagree with him). I believe this is completely democratic the government should not be using taxpayer money to support itself. They should get their support from the grass roots, that way when a party is not supported it does not stay alive. That is Democracy.

I guess this is a live blog, this is my first attempt and thus might be a little weird. My first impression is that all the leaders have done exactely what I expected. Stephan Dion says Harper is lying. Jack Layton tries to be the cool dude who will protect you from the Conservatives and Liberals. Gilles Duceppe gets all his information from Quebec yet knows everything about Canada. Elizbabeth May thinks all the answers are found in Europe. Steven Harper some how is keeping his cool while everyone else calls him a liar. So the debate ends up being Harper vs everyone else.

After watching the whole debate I have come to the conclusion that if Dion is ever voted in I will buy some land and create my own country. For some reason he has come to the conclusion that he would be a better manager of our money then we are. Then he decided to get mad at Harper for trying to give the Wheat Board competition and while he did all this he still managed to call Steven Harper a liar in almost every sentance.

The beauty of this bail out getting shot down in flames, is that it bitch slaps these bastards right upside the head and harshly reminds them that it is THEY who work for US.
I don’t know about you, but I did contact my representatives in congress and basically said that if a bail out did go through, I would not only not vote for them, but fund their competition come the next election season. It seems a couple million of you did as well, for some true STATESMEN did their duty and voted in the best interests of the people.

For those who complain about America’s “new” Vietnam (I know this is older, but I do not find it hard to believe that Orville Schell still holds that view) and how George Bush ruined the country perhaps you should read this story. It includes interesting points like this, Instead of facing gunfire and roadside bombs, the soldiers' armored Humvees are chased by waving children as they weave through streets crowded with pedestrians out to shop or just to stroll. When Saddam Hussein was in power do you think children would have waved at passing military vehicles? Would people have gone out just to stroll? As much as some do not want to hear it, the war in Iraq is being won.

My Friend's Angry Rant.

Point one: My assumptions.At the start of this rant, I am going to make a couple of assumptions that are carried through the rest of it. First, I am going to assume that the yearbook committee did everything in the book with very little input from Mr. Rork. Secondly, I am going to assume that if any facts need correcting that Magnus will care enough to read this and correct them on behalf of the committee, as I believe that adding people as friends just to critique their work would be rather unfriendly on my part.

Point two: the business perspectiveFrom a business standpoint, there was a major flaw in the conception of the theme of this year’s yearbook. The target audience for this dark, yet refreshingly original, piece of work probably makes up less than ten percent of the grade twelve class. Producing a product is all about giving the people what they want, but most people wanted candy and were given some sort of tofu bar. From this point of view, the recall makes sense. Coca-Cola had to recall their ‘revolutionary’ new flavour of coke back in the day because people simply didn’t like it. Instead, they re-released their old recipe as Coca-Cola Classic. I think that there were a good number of people in the school who found some of the content of the yearbook ‘distasteful’, so giving them the option of a ‘classic’ version only makes sense.

Point three: the choice perspectiveI believe that making the recall of the yearbook mandatory was a terrible decision. We high school students are supposed to be young adults, so why are we being forced to change our yearbooks. Some people may be perfectly happy with flaming heads being metaphors for their brains hurting during exams. There is no need for them to get a new yearbook. If the petition does not work out I will be sorely disappointed in the staff at BRHS for replacing an interesting, original, controversial yearbook with the regular cookie cutter variety we all know already. Can’t we just have both?

Point four: Subject materialI do not have that much to say concerning the subject material in this book. Although some people found a lot of the images to be disturbing, I recognize the fact that art is subjective and not everyone will ‘get it’. What annoys me are the political overtones. If certain people want to make political statements, they should speak up in social class instead of making people pay thirty five dollars for their radical, but totally unwanted, ideas. The yearbook is supposed to be about the students in our school, not the state of our ‘EVIL’ capitalist economy. Also, I was put of by one piece of artwork. I am referring to the two men with their snake-tongues entwined with a heart above their heads. Homosexuality is wrong. Period. In my mind this is not even open to debate and should not be put in the yearbook. If I get the black market copy of this version that I want, that picture will be coloured over or ripped out.

Point five: who takes the fall?I am somewhat worried for the creators of the yearbook. Having worked so hard for so long on it, the recall must be like a slap in the face. You guys truly have my deepest sympathy. My first thought is, couldn’t this all have been prevented? The yearbook could have been seen by a certain teacher at the start and been pointed in a more positive direction. This is where I fear Mr. Rork will be in trouble. I believe that he will ultimately be the one to take the fall, if one is to be taken here. He seemed like a rather soft person to me, so I doubt that he would have wanted to tell the yearbook committee that their ‘art direction’ was in the wrong direction. The school paid good money to get those yearbooks published based on his assurance that everything was alright. I can only hope that the yearbook committee will be able to shield him from the general public’s wrath.

Point six: In closingIn closing, I would like to say that there will definitely be changes in next year’s yearbook creation. I’m sure the committee will kept be on a tight leash by some of the more traditional-minded teachers. Perhaps some happy-go-lucky students will rush to be the ones to be in charge to avoid ‘The Great Tragedy of 2008” I would also like to say that my rant has probably been quite biased and I certainly do not know all the facts behind the story. I don’t even own a copy of the yearbook, although I would buy one if it became available again. I would like to thank the yearbook team for their hard work in organizing a whole year into one tiny book. I apologize for any and all inconsistencies in my logic, ethics, or viewpoints. A sincere thank you goes to anyone who actually took the time to read all of this.

Point seven: PS I’ve had a day to think about this now, and I just want to say that I hope nobody is overly offended by any of this. Also, I want to say that the petition paper people are doing a great job and I hope that works out.

Hank Van-Til, 67, was driving from Grand Falls to his home in Little River, west of Hillsborough, on Monday when he saw a pickup truck hit a doe, sending the animal into a ditch.

After pulling to the side of the road, Van-Til saw the deer was pregnant.

Van-Til fetched a knife and performed a Caesarean operation on the doe, something he'd learned how to do while working with cows.

He then delivered the baby, took the fawn back to his truck, laid paper towels down and sat the animal in the cab.

Realizing the deer would need food, he took an empty cup and milked the dying mother, then fed the baby animal using his fingers.

Yesterday, the Department of Natural Resources seized the baby deer – which the man has named "Dickie" – and launched an investigation into the matter.

Under New Brunswick law, it is illegal to take an orphaned animal home and care for it without a permit.

Wow, good thing our government is protecting us from monsters like that. I mean they do stop groups like this, but that is nothing compared to stopping someone who would save a deer.

This is a story from April but I just discovered it just today and was blown away by the law Ontario had decided to finally get rid of. I have heard of some ridicules laws but not letting people hang their clothes up has to be in the top 10. Maybe my joke about us not being able to eat chili unless its on a Sunday and there is a blue moon could come true. I certainly hope not (I really like chili). I thought the cell phone in the car was an example of the government overstepping its boundaries but this was just nuts. Well that’s all for now.

Riding home on the bus today (argh) I happened to hear the conversation behind me. The kid was talking about how they supported communism and its ends (really ARGH). Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident in my classmates. For example in my social class a kid behind me (why are they always behind me?) also says he supports communism and its ends. The teachers are just as bad, not exactly communists but definitely socialists which is not much better. Even after all the evils of the Soviet Union have come out some people still want to support other countries like it. If the next generation grows up believing Stalin’s way of governing is the best, and that the evils of capitalism are uncountable, what will come of the world? Our freedoms will be given up for a system of government that is nothing more than a theory based on wishful thinking.

The provincial governments of Quebec and Nova Scotia are following Newfoundland and Labrador's "groundbreaking" lead in banning cellphone use while driving. Another step toward the bleak cliff of tyranny. I love it when our governments tell us what we can and can't do. This instance seems trivial compared with what they could try to do. But I believe that we should not allow them to have any gains in oppressing our freedoms. If we let them get away with this what stops them from saying we can't eat chili unless its on a Sunday and there is a blue moon or installing a one child policy. Maybe the jump from cell phone bans to one child polices seems like a gigantic leap. I fear that if the temptation is there, they will deluded themselves into believing it is for the betterment of the people so it should be done. It includes such things as polluting, excessive wealth, and contributing to the widening gap between the rich and the poor. So let me get this straight. If Lakshmi Mittal (fourth richest man in the world) stays rich, and throws a water bottle on to the side of the road he’s committed two deadly sins, possibly three (if you think he has helped increase the gap between the rich and the poor). Not much he can do right is there? I guess the seven deadly sins must have been getting old and irrelevant so they needed a shot in the arm.

Well it's official. Alberta has voted in it's 11th majority conservitive government. It has been 37 years since the tories first got into power and they are not leaving any time soon. Amidst a gathering of students, teachers and parents from Valhalla school, notice for a motion to close the facility was passed Thursday at Peace Wapiti School Division’s regular meeting of the board.

The Peace Wapiti School board has been trying to close down Valhalla for years. In this "new" attack they are basically making the same mistake they have made before. The main mistake is that the surrounding schools are at capacity, or over, but that doesn't stop them. This is just another attempt in a long line, no matter how many times the school board tries to close Valhalla down and fails at the attempt they never seem to learn. Maybe if we win this time they will leave us alone but somehow I get the idea that is wishful thinking.

Now Hezbollah is calling for retaliation against Israel, his death being a conveniant spark to set the radicals a blaze. Everyone knows that Canada is fighting in Afghanistan. We have been doing so since 2002. So far we have lost 77 good men and a diplomat to things such as roadside bombs and combat. As of January 15th, we have lost 62 soldiers to combat/attacks/expolsions, 6 to "friendly fire", 7 accidental deaths, 1 self-inflicted and 2 still under investigation. In 2002, we lost 4 to the friendly fire accident of April 18, 2002. In 2003, we lost 2 soldiers to a landmine. In 2004, we lost a soldier to a sucide attack. In 2005, we lost another soldier to a LAV 3 rollover. In 2006 we lost 36 soldiers to varoius things like IED's and other things. In 2007 we lost 30 soldiers to various sources. And now it is 2008 and we have already lost 3 soldiers in16 days. If this keeps up, 2008 could be the bloodiest year in Afghanistan so far. So here's to the brave men and women who answer the call and pay the ultimate price for a country halfway around the world. People of the Canadian Armed Force I Salute You!!!

I sure most of you have heard of the saddening events that was the closure of The Western Standard do to some “human rights issues”. The complaints are about the Western Standard printing the Mohammed cartoons. These complaints come from two different sources a Imam (very radical) Syed Soharwardy, the other from The Edmonton Muslim Council. Ezra Levant the publisher at the time has been taken to the “human rights” commission. This is despicable as Ezra mentions the government can’t force a convicted murder to apologies for killing people but they can make a publisher apologies for printing political cartoons. If you were deprived of the cartoons I have graciously compiled them for you.

Ah the Gun Registry, winner of the most useless idea award every year since it was installed (at least in my books). I consider it one of the biggest wastes of taxpayers’ money ever we have spent over Two Billion dollars (some estimates say even higher than that) on it with nothing to show for it. There was 605 murders in 2006 only 190 involved guns. 108 of the 190 murders were committed using handguns, 24 more were committed using sawed-off shotguns and rifles. What is interesting about this is sawed-off shotguns are illegal and you have had to register handguns since. How is this registry going to stop people from committing crimes if the guns in the related murders are illegal guns anyways? Another interesting fact is of the 48 recovered guns recovered at crime scenes 18 have been registered that’s 38%. Now think of the guns not recovered (142) if 38% are registered that’s about 54 guns that are registered and used in a crime. Not a large amount of registered guns actually used in a crime. I believe this is partially due to the fact that people who register guns are law abiding citizens. Also since the gun registry has been put in place many registered gun owners have reported their guns stolen. Many believe that this is because the gun registry has been hacked giving criminals maps to where easily obtainable guns are. I think if instead of wasting 2 billion on the gun registry if the money had gone to law enforcement we would have gotten much better results. That is enough from me.

Sayyed Imam al-Sharif one of Osama bin Laden's senior theologist(and mentor) says that bin Laden is wrong for planning September 11. Now I only just heard about this (on CNN of all places) but I wounder if this is a sign of a turning point or is this a speck in a sand storm? Will al-Sharif's denouncing of bin Laden cause a significant drop in the number of new recruits or even older members that stay. It possibly could; only time will tell.

Being a citizen of Canada gives you rights and responsibilities. You have the right to your opinion; you have a responsibility to vote. Unfortunately we live in a society where people are lazy and only willing to get the benefits of Citizenship but none of the duties that come with it. The Israel Lebanon war is a great example. When the war was approaching suddenly thousands of “Canadians” appeared there and wanted to be taken away. I ask you what have these “Canadians” done for the good of our country. Have they been over in Lebanon building bridges, curing the sick? The answer is most were doing nothing that supported Canada or its goals in that region. They just hang around wherever they want. If they get sick they might fly up to Canada for our free health care but otherwise they don’t really care about us. This is not isolated to “citizens” outside of Canada either. There are many people in Canada that take their citizenship for granted. They are quick to argue if someone infringes on their rights but if they have a responsibility to do something like serving on a jury they say no. Is being a Canadian citizen worth the responsibilities? I say “yes”. I just wish other citizens would figure that out.

According to the CIC (Canadian Islamic Congress) Mark Steyn’s book is "flagrantly Islamophobic.” Now I have read this book (and if any readers today have not I strongly suggest you stop reading and run to the nearest Chapters and get it) and it is not a book of racism or bigotry. Honestly though what allows the Imams to call for the death of Israel and the West, but a non minority group/person can not even talk about demographic comparisons between Muslims and Western nations. Mark Steyn is right about the major role population differences between Muslim and Western nations will be playing in the events ahead. Though many Leftist groups will not admit that demographic differences matter at all, because a proper citizen of a Western nation knows that we should not have children because there are poor people in other parts of the world. I hope the courts will not bow to the pressure the CIC, and other Muslim groups, will put on them. I don’t have much hope though because I think we all know how courts deal with any sort of white man vs violent minority groups. That’s enough ranting for now.

More than 80 police officers were injured in pitched battles with youths. This is another case of France's death spiral if they can't learn to deal with their immigrant problems. I think they really have to crack down on the people involved with or supporting the rioters. I hope President Sarkozy is willing to do what is necessary to stop the riots, be it deporting those involved, controlling immigration to the country or what ever is needed.

The Australian Election

The Australian election voted in Kevin Rudd of the Labor Party in to power today. Now I don’t claim to be an expert on Australian politics but some of his promises seamed to be going to take Australia down a dark and slipper slope. Like how he would pull all Australian troops out of Iraq (now on this post I will not argue for the war or against it) what I do hate are politicians who have no real Military knowledge making huge claims about how they will pull every troop out the day they are elected. Granted the Australians only have 550 troops but still you can’t just step in and pull ever man and women out on your first day in office. The other promise that bugged me is how he would apologize to the natives. Now I believe the reason he wants to apologize is because of the last government stepping in to the native reserves getting rid of the Alcohol and help the native help themselves. So his claim leads me to believe that he will allow alcohol back in to the reserves and generally loose all ground gained towards really helping the natives. But I guess only time will tell if Kevin Rudd will be a good leader or not.

The Mainstream Media all hail it and its commitment to the truth …sorry I had to take a breath there to stop from laughing. Mainstream Media is pitiful they say how they are unbiased and tell the story as it is but then you come across things like them showing forged pictures of bombed out buildings with hundreds of dead people from Israel's "massive" bombings just because they think Israel should not have attacked Lebanon. They also say how they are not influenced by anyone but then they were all afraid to print the Mohammed cartoons because of fear of violent backlash. The Media also seams to not care about if a story is true or not just whether they get good ratings from it. It also does not matter if the story is a state secret that protects people lives like the names of your countries undercover agents in a terrorist group. Well enough rambling for now I should go before the media blames the forest fires in California on me.

I have come to the conclusion that the world is scared of everything that in some miniscule way could get them sued. In this day and age companies put warnings on their coffee cups saying it might be hot so they can’t be sued by some person. You notice this everywhere like when I was in Costco with some of my relatives a while back. I was standing at a booth watching someone make smoothies he poured it into some cups and offered it to people I stepped forward, being a fan of smoothies, when he asked me how old I was 16 I replied. He then proceeded to ask me if my parents were here. I said no (I was in with my relatives after all) he then stated that I could not have a smoothie. Now this made me very mad why is the world so scared of being sued that a person who is deemed responsible enough to drive might not know his own allergies. I for one have known my allergies since I was very young and I am pretty sure he did not put penicillin in the smoothies. But I guess that is the world we live in now I have to go to read a safety Manuel on how to exit a vehicle.
